Release of 1.5.3-RC5-SLIM: Changes & fixes.

This short noticed 1.5.3-RC5-SLIM release is a surprise.

Even for me.

Grab the ISO from here:

https://iso.argentlinux.io/Argent.KDE.BETA.1.5.3-RC5-SLIM.amd64.iso

Hash: e56e3b401e6f859dac2845809a740d26 Argent.KDE.BETA.1.5.3-RC5-SLIM.amd64.iso

The new ISO comes with a very slim size (compared with its predecessors), to be precise 1.8GB more slim.

Even though this is quite the improvement, the optimizations won't (yet) stop. I'm testing few new methods of keeping the same packages, and optimize for size even further.

.

Furthermore, this release RC5-SLIM also brings a working sound!

Users won't have to follow wiki.argentlinux.io known issues anymore in order to fix their sound.

(Although, you should keep this one in tab)

.

Other, more pressing issues: missing build dependencies

I have removed the build programs from the ISO (meson, ninja, make, autoconf, automake , so forth)

This is slightly a blow to pure Gentoo users that expect to install Argent and have a pure Gentoo ready for them.

Unfortunately this is not the case.

There are two steps to activate Gentoo precompiled and compile mode in the same time:

  • Switch to development mode by running: avasile --devmode
  • Install your build dependencies (just like in any other regular distribution): epkg o --with-bdeps y dev-build/autoconf dev-build/autoconf dev-build/automake dev-build/libtool dev-build/make dev-build/ninja dev-libs/md4c

I will soon introduce a avasile --devmode warning about this.

It should basically mention if you are missing some build dependencies.

Mind you: epkg o is not the same thing as epkg i !

Consult epkg --help for the difference.

But in short, for the love of computing, use epkg o (or epkg ao for --no-interactivity) in order to install build or general dependencies of a application.

Never install dependencies of a application with epkg i!

If you mistakenly did, the solution is: emerge --deselect packagename

It's a Gentoo thing you can find here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Emerge#Do_not_add_dependencies_to_the_world_file

Please try to remember we're a Gentoo-based distro.

That means Gentoo documentation absolutely still applies in every possible aspect.

Try not to be in this case: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gentoo/comments/1njtex8/why_does_argent_linux_neofetch_say_its_gentoo/

(Although I'm convinced the OP was a good troll + my sincere thanks for free promo)
